About POsitive Behaviour Support

PBS is a person-centred framework for supporting people with learning disabilities and/or autism, who do already, or may be at the risk of, developing behaviours that challenge.

PBS is a multi-component, person-centred and lasting system of support that aims to enhance the Quality of Life for the person as well as those supporting them. It involves the use of constructional interventions based on data-driven decision making to build support workers skills and remove the need for aversive and restrictive practices

The PBS framework:

  • Establishes a system of support that values dignity, choice, participation, and equal opportunity
  • Considers the person and his or her life circumstances including physical health and emotional needs.
  • Establishes physical and social environments that are supportive and able to meet the person’s needs
  • Is proactive and preventative and seeks to teach people new skills to replace the behaviours that challenge, and skills that increase the opportunities people have for independent living
  • Gets feedback from different professionals and includes multiple evidence-based approaches and interventions that originate from a shared value base and are provided in a organised and person-centred manner

There is strong evidence in support of PBS as support framework for individuals with learning disabilities who display behaviours that challenge. The evidence demonstrates considerable reductions in behaviours that challenge and expansion in positive skills following PBS interventions being introduced.

Denise Deary is our Positive Behavior Support Practitioner at BNR Group. Denise has experience in health and social care and a degree in Positive behavior support. You can reach Denise for any PBS Related enquires on denise@bnragency.co.uk
